Kids & Teens Classes

For Spring 2024:

Sunday morning and afternoon sessions for young potters aged 9 to 14, begin March 24 and end June 2; no class on May 12. Meet in second floor studio.

Teen class for 14 to 18 year olds, begins March 24 and ends June 2; no class on May 12. Meets in first floor studio.

Beginners get solid grounding in pottery fundamentals, more advanced students develop skills in throwing on the potter’s wheel as well as a variety of handbuilding techniques. Cost of clay, use of tools and equipment, glazes and firing are included in the fee.

On the wheel, students are taught how to center a mound of clay and later how to throw, trim and glaze their pots. All learn how to make cups, bowls and other simple forms. With handbuilding, they explore making functional and decorative objects. The instructor for the Sunday classes is the incomparable Karna Robinson, known to some as the ‘Kid Whisperer.’

Students should wear clothes that can get dirty, trim their fingernails short, tie back long hair and bring an old towel for wiping their hands. (Towels may be rented for $1.00 each time.)

Wearing a mask is now optional. IMPORTANT, if feeling ill, stay home. Help us keep everyone safe and healthy.

Maximum class size upstairs is 8 and downstairs is 10. Hinckley Pottery reserves the right to cancel a session if enrollment does not reach a minimum of 4 students for upstairs classes and 5 students for the downstairs class. There are no refunds for registrations canceled less than two weeks before the session begins. If a student withdraws before then, a refund will be made minus a nonrefundable registration fee of $90.00. If the session is canceled, a full refund will be made. There are no refunds for absences.
